Byron Alkali Vernal Pools

Map     Satellite

These vernal pools are somewhat alkaline and support a flora differing from the typical vernal pools found elsewhere in the Central Valley. Many of the normal vernal pool species, but not all, are excluded by the alkalinity.

Among the species found here are Amsinckia eastwoodiae, Downingia insignis, Frankenia salina, Myosurus minimus, Plantago elongata, and Sporobolus airoides.

Integrity: Though grazed by sheep, the area is still relatively intact. A railroad borders one side of the area. Some of the surrounding fields have been converted to a salt-tolerant barley.

Use: Private
