Butte Creek Canyon Overlook

Map     Satellite

This area, which is adjacent to Skyway Highway a few kilometers southwest of Paradise, overlooks Little Butte Canyon and a portion of Butte Canyon just above the confluence of Little Butte Creek with Butte Creek.

At the lower levels of these steep-sided canyons is a well-exposed Chico formation, of Upper Cretaceous marine sedimentary origin and with fossiliferous sandstone, shale and conglomerate. Above lies the Pliocene volcanic Tuscan formation, which forms most of the eroded canyon wall. This formation includes breccia, tuff and substantial mud flows.

Vegetation at the overlook is chaparral and foothill woodland.

Integrity: Virtually undisturbed.
