Coon Hollow Wildlife Area

This wildlife area is divided into two units approximately 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) apart. The West Branch Unit is located at the confluence of Coon Hollow Creek and the West Branch of the Feather River. The Snow Mountain Unit lies to the east along Coon Hollow Creek.

Wet meadows with a montane riparian association are the prime communities in the wildlife area. Among the trees found here are white alder, Alnus rhombifolia, willow, Salix spp., quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides, and cottonwood, Populus sp.

The uplands support a coniferous forest with white fir, Abies concolor, rod fir, Abies magnifica, and Western white pine, Pinus monticola, among others.

Animals are abundant and varied. Among the numerous species present are black bear, Ursus americanus, red fox, Vulpes fulva, black-tailed deer, Odocoileus hemionus, great gray owl, Strix nebulosa, pileated woodpecker, Oryocopus pileatus, and mountain quail, Oreortyx pictus.

Integrity: There has been cattle grazing and logging on the wildlife area. Most of the area is in relatively good condition; it is managed for habitat and wildlife preservation.

Use: Research, educational, observational. Present.
