Sawmill Peak Area
Map SatelliteLying to the east of the West Branch of the Feather River, this area supports several plant communities.
In much of the area there is a ponderosa pine forest, with Pinus ponderosa and sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana, conspicuous. In the lower elevations chaparral, with Arctostaphylos sp., a Ceanothus sp. and gray pine, Pinus sabiniana, prevails. There is some MacNab cypress, Cupressus macnabiana, here. The rare Fritillaria eastwoodiae is found nearby and may occur in the area.
Geologically, there are large outcrops of serpentine and related rocks. Additionally, there are Mesozoic granitics, metavolcanics and Paleozoic metasedimentaries in the area.
Integrity: A dirt road transects the area. Portions have been logged and, in 1970, burned; however, the more rugged areas are relatively undisturbed.
Use: Research, educational, observational, present. Some private.
