Snaden Island
Map SatelliteThough much of the island is orchard, there are remnants of the typical valley riparian association, particularly along the sloughs. The overstory includes sycamore, Platanus racemosa, cottonwood, Populus fremontii, and valley oak, Quercus lobata. Some of the trees are 30 to 40 years old. In the understory are willows, Salix spp., blackberry, Rubus ursinus, and wild grape, Vitis californica.
Animal populations include river otter, Lutra canadensis, raccoon, Procyon lotor, and a variety of birds.
The Sacramento River, which meanders in this stretch, has formed a cut-off meander and various sloughs.
Integrity: The orchard was planted in the early 1970's, destroying much of the riparian habitat; however, the remnants are relatively undisturbed.
