Browns And Winter Islands

Map     Satellite

These two islands at the western end of the Delta are examples of freshwater marshes.

Vegetation is predominantly cattails, Typha spp., and tules, Scirpus spp. On the upland area there are willows, Salix sp., and some grassland.

Salt-water intrusion in the area is infrequent and minimal.

The Suisun song sparrow, Melospiza melodia maxillaris, occurs in the area, as may the river otter, Lutra canadensis. Blue herons, Ardea herodias, have bred here.

Integrity: Winter Island is partially leveed and is managed for duck hunting. Brown Island is virtually undisturbed.
