Sobrante Ridge Manzanita Grove

Map     Satellite

This site is one of a small number of manzanita "islands" in the Bay Area. Chaparral at this site is surrounded by a mixed evergreen forest with California bay, Umbellularia californica, and coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia. Within the grove the dominant species is the brittleleaf manzanita, Arctostaphylos tomentosa, which occupies over two-fifths of the area and which reaches its northern limit here. The rare Arctostaphylos pallida covers 10% of the area; this plant is known from only two other locations. Other species include yerba santa, Eriodictyon californicum, toyon, Heteromeles arbutifolia, and bush monkey-flower, Mimulus aurantiacus.

Along this ridge the chaparral grows on outcrops of Rodeo shale.

Integrity: Virtually undisturbed.

Use: Private
