Sawtooth Mountain

>Map     >Satellite

In this area are high-quality, low and mid-elevation Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, forests mixed with either tan-oak, Lithocarpus densiflora, or white fir, Abies concolor. There are also good stands of Port Orford cedar, Cupressus lawsoniana. Near Elk Hole the Alaska cedar, Cupressus nootkatensis, reaches its southernmost limit. Here, as in other stands in this general area (see Bear Peak Area), these trees are relatively small, almost forming a ground cover. Two rare plants are found in or above Elk Valley, the very rare Lilium occidentale, and Monardella purpurea.

There is evidence of Pleistocene glaciation, including several cirques.

This area is of religious significance to several of the Indian tribes inhabiting the region.

Integrity: The area is undeveloped though there is a trail through a portion and a guard station is just outside the boundary.

Use: Research, educational, observational, light recreation.
