Stout Grove

>Map     >Satellite

Stout Grove is an excellent example of an alluvial-terrace old-growth redwood forest. Here the redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, is mixed with Western hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla, and California bay, Umbellularia californica. Oxalis oregana, Trillium ovatum and Polystichum munitum are conspicuous elements in the herb layer.

In the area is the type locality for the rare and possibly extinct Erigeron cervinus.

This area lies on the south side of the Smith River.

Integrity: There is a parking area, and an extensive trail system leads to the Stout Tree and the Smith River, but the grove is in excellent condition.

Use: Research, educational, observational, present.
