Backbone Creek Research Natural Area

>Map     >Satellite

This area was established to protect the endemic Carpenteria californica.

The species' entire range covers some 130 square kilometers (50 square miles) centering in this area. The showy blooms of this plant, which flowers during May and June, have made it a valued ornamental in other parts of the world. This particular area contains a number of other showy shrubs including the buckeye, Aesculus californica, redbud, Cercis occidentalis, bush poppy, Dendromecon rigida, and the flannel bush, Fremontodendron californicum.

Carpenteria, a relict species, is taxonomically unique, there being but one species in the genus and no close relatives. Some scientists consider it a primitive link between the Rosales and Violales,

Little is known of its ecology, though it appears to be a fire-sprouting species.

Integrity: The thick brush has severely restricted grazing.

See Carpenteria Botanical Area and Mill Creek Carpenteria Area.

Use: Research, education.
