>Map >Satellite One of the two areas set aside to protect the endemic Carpenteria californica, this area lies some 5 kilometers (3 miles) southeast of the other reserve, the Backbone Creek Research Natural Area. In this area the plant occurs on the Big Sandy Bluffs on a soil characterized as a rocky phase of the Tollhouse soil series. It is probable that the plant is restricted to this relatively poor soil type throughout most of its range, which covers some 130 square kilometers (50 square miles) in the Auberry-Tollhouse area. Carpenteria, a monotypic genus, in the family Philadelphaceae (sometimes treated in the Hydrangeaceae). Integrity; Virtually undisturbed. Highway 168 forms the southwestern boundary of the area.
