Cedarbrook Area

Immediately west of one of the entrances to the Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park is an excellent example of the transition from a foothill woodland to a ponderosa pine forest. Among the trees found here are Pacific dogwood, Cornus nuttallii, white fir, Abies concolor, big-leaf maple, Acer macrophyllum, incense cedar, Calocedrus decurrens, California black oak, Quercus kelloggii, interior live oak, Quercus wislizenii, white alder, Alnus rhombifolia, ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, and sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana.

Of particular note is the outstanding grove of California nutmeg, Torreya californica, which occurs here in sufficient numbers to support significant research. Although the tree exists commonly in the Coast Ranges and in small clusters throughout the Sierra Nevada, this stand is very accessible and consists of many more individuals than in most stands. It follows the general course of Mill Creek.

Integrity: There are numerous cabins, roads, a campground and picnic area. The grove is intact.

Use: Research, educational, observational, on public portion; remainder, private.
