Fresno Mima Mounds

>Map     >Satellite

A series of mima mounds, of varying sizes, interspersed with a few vernal pools, occurs in this area.

Vegetation is primarily valley grasslands, with a high proportion of exotics, though there are vernal pool communities. Two endangered plants, Castilleja campestris ssp. succulenta and Orcuttia californica var. inaequalis, have been found here.

Noteworthy among the animals inhabiting the area are the tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum, and the Western spadefoot, Scaphiopus hammondi.

The area lies on Pleistocene nonmarine sedimentary rocks and has a sandy soil. The mima mounds, also known as prairie mounds, may be relict sand dunes.

Integrity: The area has been grazed and a road bisects it. A residential development is threatening to engulf the area.
