>Map >Satellite MAP Satellite This area contains several communities representative of the lower elevations of the Sierra foothills. The major community is chaparral, with Arctostaphylos spp., Ceanothus spp. and Cercocarpus betuloides the dominants. There is an oak woodland with blue and interior live oak, Quercus douglasii and Quercus wislizenii. Along the San Joaquin River, which here flows through a steep-sided gorge up to 600 meters (2,000 feet) deep, and along some of the tributary creeks there is a riparian association including cottonwood, Populus fremontii, white alder, Alnus rhombifolia, and willow, Salix sp. Some gray pine, Pinus sabiniana, woodland is also found in the area. Wildlife is typical of the central Sierra foothills. Integrity: The area is managed as a recreation area and there are trails, an access road and parking facilities; however, much of the area is comparatively undisturbed. Use: Research, educational, observational, present. Some private. September 1977
