White Creek Soda Syenite

>Map     >Satellite

Of interest to geologists is the intrusive stock of soda syenite which is found near the head of White Creek. Three such stocks are found in the region, this being the largest. Its significance lies in the fact that this syenite has the highest known sodium content of any igneous rock in the world.

The rock is composed chiefly of albite, a sodium aluminum silicate, and its decomposition products but there are long prisms of black hornblende which contrast strikingly with the white of the feldspar. The syenite is variable, ranging from very fine grained to porphyritic.

Integrity: There are mines in the vicinity.

Use: Research, educational
