Sacramento River Oxbow Preserve

>Map     >Satellite

Several kilometers east and north of the town of Glenn the Sacramento River forms several meanders, one of which borders this preserve.

Much of the preserve is covered by a dense riparian forest. Cottonwood, Populus fremontii, is the dominant tree, but box elders, Acer negundo, and sandbar willows, Salix hindsiana, are important elements of the forest. Wild grape, Vitis californica, is a conspicuous member of the understory which, in portions, forms nearly impenetrable thickets. On the higher ground there are some valley oaks, Quercus lobata, and some grassland.

Animals are abundant. Among those of note are beaver, Castor canadensis, otter, Lutra canadensis, ringtail, Bassariscus astutus, and the endangered yellow-billed cuckoo, Coccyzus americanus. Over 150 species of birds utilize the area.

The preserve lies within an oxbow formed by the Sacramento River.

Integrity: At this point the levees bounding the river are approximately two kilometers (1-1/4 miles) apart. The right bank levee lies some 300 meters (1,000 feet) from the preserve boundary. Vegetation is relatively undisturbed.

Use: Educational, scientific.
