Sheetiron Mountain

>Map     >Satellite

This area, which includes the summit and slopes of the mountain, is marked by a great variety of plants and is remarkable for the density of bloom during the spring and early summer months.

There is a particularly fine stand of red fir, Abies magnifica, here as well as yellow pine, Pinus ponderosa, and Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii. Brewers oak, Quercus garryana var. breweri, grows here in abundance.

Among the herbaceous species the scarlet fritillary, Fritillaria recurva, Fritillaria glauca, and the steer's head, Dicentra uniflora, are noteworthy.

There is a fine view of the inner Coast Range and the Central Valley from the summit. West of the area is a State game refuge.

Integrity: The entire area lies within the Mendocino National Forest. Though there is logging in the vicinity, the area does not appear to be endangered at this time. The road to the lookout station atop the mountain traverses the area.

Use: Research, educational, light recreational
