>Map >Satellite In a trough at the base of the bluffs and behind the coastal sand dunes at Clam Beach is a series of freshwater ponds up to 275 meters (900 feet) long and all approximately 45 meters (150 feet) wide. Portions of their perimeters are typical freshwater marshes. The area is very rich in aquatic plants, with perhaps 200 species present. Vertebrates and invertebrates are well represented and the ponds contain a great variety and number of protistans. Integrity: Though U.S. 101 is adjacent, the area itself is relatively undisturbed. Use: Research, educational, observational. The area is used by various educational institutions in the region. A part of it is privately owned. July 1976
