>Map >Satellite This small island south of Trinidad Head is a nesting site for pelagic cormorants, Phalacrocorax pelagicus, and pigeon guillemots, Cepphus columba. It is one of the few offshore islands with soil conditions suitable for nesting petrels; however, no Leach's or fork-tailed petrels have been observed breeding here, though they do breed on nearby islands. Vegetation includes silk-tassel bush, Garrya elliptica, poison oak, Toxicodendron diversilobum, California huckleberry, Vaccinium ovatum, and Polypodium scouleri. Integrity: Virtually undisturbed. Use: Research, observational. Ref: Osborne, Timothy, 1972. Ecology and Avian Use of the Coastal Rocks of Northern California. M.A. Thesis, unpub. Humboldt State University. 215 pp. November 1975
