Dry Lagoon (State Park)

>Map     >Satellite

A few meters inland from the ocean, behind low dunes, lies a freshwater marsh covering some 30 hectares (80 acres). The vegetation is typical north coastal freshwater marsh, Scirpus spp., Typha spp., and Carex obnupta. Additionally there are good examples of a red alder, Alnus rubra, forest mixed with Sitka spruce, Picea sitchensis, and of the northern coastal scrub. Coastal strand vegetation is found in the dunes. The rare Castilleja ambigua ssp. humboldtiensis is found here.

The marsh is frequented by migratory waterfowl.

Most of the coastline is sandy beach but there are some rocky headlands. Dry Lagoon lies between Big Lagoon and Stone Lagoon.

Integrity: The marsh and other plant communities are within the Dry Lagoon State Park. There is a road as well as a day-use picnic area near the beach, but the marsh is virtually undisturbed.

Use: Research, educational, observational, present.
