Grasshopper Peak Prairie

>Map     >Satellite

Within the Humboldt Redwoods State Park (see also Rockefeller Forest), in the vicinity of Grasshopper Peak, are fine examples of coastal prairie grassland. The main native grasses include Festuca idahoensis and Danthonia californica. There are exotic grasses also.

Bordering the grasslands is a mixed evergreen forest with Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, tan-oak, Lithocarpus densiflora, madrone, Arbutus menziesii, and incense cedar, Calocedrus decurrens. The latter is probably at its westernmost limit here.

Integrity: The area is fully protected and has suffered little from human impact.

Use: Research, educational, observational, present.
