>Map >Satellite This section of the coastline of the King Range National Conservation Area, between Big Flat Creek and Horse Mountain Creek, is backed, in the most part, by steep, rocky cliffs. The inaccessibility of the coastline has made it an important breeding ground for the Steller sea lion, Eumetopias jubata, and the harbor seal, Phoca vitulina. The California sea lion, Zalophus californianus, may occasionally haul out here. Numerous shorebirds frequent the area and various raptors nest on the cliffs. The osprey, Pandion haliaetus, is relatively abundant here. The beach strand is dominated by the rye grass, Leymus mollis. The steep, rocky coastline has a rich flora of marine algae. There are a number of tidepools both in the protected and unprotected outer coast regions. Integrity: Virtually pristine Use: Research, educational, observational, light recreational. August 1975
