>Map >Satellite This area contains a stand of the crucifixion thorn, Castela emoryi, which is second in size only to that of the Crucifixion Thorn Natural Area #1, a few kilometers to the northeast. Here the shrubs may reach a height of 3 to 3.5 meters (10 - 12 feet), somewhat smaller than those to the northeast. The plant is considered rare in California and, though it ranges into Arizona and Sonora, it is uncommon. Associated with the Castela is a creosote bush scrub. Located in a shallow, alluvium-filled depression, which is probably the floor of a Quaternary lake bed, the site is surrounded by sharply rising rocky hills and canyons. The infrequent rains drain into the basin. A number of animals have been observed in the area, including 26 species of mammals, 30 avian species and 21 reptilian. Integrity: Virtually undisturbed Use: Research, education. For information, contact Bureau of Land Management. March 1976
