Fossil Canyon

>Map     >Satellite

This canyon, which has been thoroughly worked by amateur and professional paleontologists, held a wide variety of fossilized Pliocene marine invertebrates, including sand dollars, oysters, clams and other mollusks.  The fossils occur in marine sediments which have been uplifted and faulted. Pre-Cenozoic granitic and metamorphic rocks are exposed in the area.

Vegetation in the canyon, which is quite steep-sided, is of the creosote bush scrub community.

Integrity: There is a jeep road and prospecting occurs in the area. Over-collecting has lowered the value of this site and it should be afforded more protection.

Use:  Research, education.  For information, contact Bureau of Land Management.
