Grays Well

>Map     >Satellite

In the Algodones Dunes just north of the Mexican border, near Gray's Well, is a unique concentration of rare plants.  Several of the plants such as Pholisma sonorae and Croton wigginsii, though more common in Arizona or Mexico, are found only here and at one or two other sites in California.

The other plants are more narrowly endemic and include Astragalus magdalenae var. peirsonii, Eriogonum deserticola, Helianthus niveus ssp. tephrodes, and Palafoxia linearis var. gigantea.

Integrity: The area is bordered by a highway paralleling a transmission line. There has been off-road vehicle activity in the area.

Use:  Research, educational, observational.
