Salton Sea Wetlands

>Map     >Satellite

Interspersed between the various wildlife refuges and other areas (see Imperial Wildlife Area, Obsidian Buttes Area and Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge) on the southern and eastern sides of the Salton Sea (see Salton Sea Margin Areas) is a series of wetlands of varying sizes.

A variety of plant species is found in these areas; the community composition depends upon the degree of salinity, with some freshwater species occurring in the rivers and irrigation channels.  Some of the species present include Typha angustifolium, Scirpus americanus, Scirpus robustus, Pluchea sericea, Leptochloa uninervia, Juncus cooperi, and Heliotropium curassavicum.

These areas form an important part of the waterfowl habitat of the Sea.

Integrity: Their composition and survival depends upon the fluctuations of the Sea's level which, in recent years, has been stabilized.

Use:  Present, research, educational, observational.
