Cerro Gordo ACEC

Map     Satellite

Both historical and natural elements are found in this Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC). Historically, the area is important for the remnants of the mining boom of the 1870's and '80's and for Indian relicts and sites.

Vegetation in the area is primarily a pinyon woodland, with Pinus monophylla dominant. There is some sage scrub with Artemisia sp. present. The area supports a number of rare or unusual plant species including Caulostramina jaegeri, Phacelia amabilis, Perityle inyoensis, Eriogonum eremicola and Eriogonum microthecum var. panamintense.

Animal life is comparatively abundant and typical of the White (Inyo) Mountains.

There are several springs in the area.

Geologically, the area is underlain by Devonian and Silurian limestones, quartzite and other rocks.

Integrity: There are a number of mines in the area, some still operating, remnants of a mining camp, some residential buildings, roads and tramways. These have impinged on the vegetation and, today, mining is still impacting the plants. Additionally, feral burros are damaging the plants.

Use: Research, educational, observational, present. Some private.
