Inyo Mountain Crest

Map     Satellite

Approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) of the crest and upper slopes south of Waucoba Mountain are included in this area.

A bristlecone pine forest covers about three-quarters of the area. The bristlecone pine, Pinus longaeva, is mixed with limber pine, Pinus flexilis, on the borders of the forest and along the drier ridges. In the southern portion there is a pinyon-juniper woodland with Pinus monophylla and Juniperus occidentalis var. australis.

There are several meadows with Carex sp. Rare plants occurring in the area include Astragalus kentrophyta var. elatus, Cryptantha roosiorum, Eriogonum rupinum, and Lomatium foeniculaceum ssp. inyoense.

Desert bighorn, Ovis canadensis, inhabit the area.

Geologically, the area includes Cambrian, Silurian, Mississippian and Pennsylvania metasedimentaries, with dolomite and limestone.

Gentle slopes form much of the higher area. There are several springs and intermittent creeks.

Integrity: The area is grazed and there has been extensive cutting and collecting of the eroded bristle-cones. A jeep road enters the area. One of the springs on the adjacent slopes has been severely impacted by cattle.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
