Clear Creek (Havilah Area)

Map     Satellite

Here Clear Creek runs through a broad, flat area which has numerous granitic outcrops and which is bounded by the steep faces of the canyon.

Foothill woodland is the dominant community with such trees as the Douglas oak, Quercus douglasii, digger pine, Pinus sabiniana, and some California juniper, Juniperus californica. Near the creek are found arroyo willow, Salix lasiolepis, cottonwood, Populus fremontii, and redberry, Rhamnus crocea.

A variety of plants grow in the creek bed, including Centaurium exaltatum, Cirsium occidentale var. californicum, and Mimulus guttatus. Also present is non-native peppermint ( Mentha X piperita).

The uncommon Streptanthus cordatus var. piutensis is found here, as are the rare species Navarretia setiloba and Perideridia parishii.

Among the animals, the pinyon mouse, Peromyscus truei, is quite abundant.

Integrity: The area is traversed by a road and power line and has several ranch buildings on it. It is fenced and there is some cattle grazing.

Use: Private
