Delano Voice Of America Area

Map     Satellite

A rarity in the midst of the agricultural lands of the southern San Joaquin Valley, this is a disturbed remnant of the once common prairie grasslands of the valley. Among the native grasses present are Vulpia myuros var. hirsuta, Vulpia microstachys var. pauciflora, and Distichlis spicata. Other natives present include Atriplex polycarpa and Atriplex spinifera. Some of the ubiquitous exotic grasses, such as Bromus madritensis ssp. rubens, Bromus hordeaceus, and Hordeum murinum ssp. glaucum, have infiltrated the area.

Numerous animals typical of the grassland community are found in this plot. Among the mammals are the pinyon mouse, Peromyscus truei, deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, jack rabbit, Lepus californicus, coyote, Canis latrans, and probably the endangered San Joaquin kit fox, Vulpes macrotis var. mutica. The endangered blunt-nosed leopard lizard, Crotaphytus wislizenii silus, probably occurs here.

Integrity: There are numerous transmitters, cables, buildings, etc., and the area is occasionally grazed by sheep; however, it does preserve a good example of the grassland habitat.

Use: Restricted. Research, educational.
