Greenhorn Piute Cypress Grove

Map     Satellite

Some 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the Bodfish Grove there is a small, scattered grove of Piute cypress, Cupressus nevadensis. This grove is unique in that it lies in a creek bed. This colony also differs from the other Piute cypress groves, which usually occur in dense, continuous stands, in that the distribution of trees varies from a single mature tree to small clusters of three or more; there are more than 50 individual trees.

Found in association with the cypress here are canyon live oak, Quercus chrysolepis, gray pine, Pinus sabiniana, Oregon ash, Fraxinus latifolia, Yucca whipplei, Mariposa manzanita, Arctostaphylos viscida ssp. mariposa, and buck brush, Ceanothus cuneatus, among others.

The canyon cut exposes a Mesozoic granitic and a Pre-Cenozoic limestone contact where tungsten had been found. The creek is intermittent.

Integrity: This area may have been burned in 1961. The tungsten mine, immediately adjacent to the trees, is no longer operating.

Use: Private
