Hobo Ridge Piute Cypress Grove

Map     Satellite

Lying 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) west of the Bodfish Grove, this grove contains several hundred Piute cypress, Cupressus nevadensis, in scattered stands. Several age groups are represented, there having been fires in 1966, a few years prior to 1953, and earlier. Some of the trees are of considerable age, probably 400 years plus, and are 10 - 12 meters (35 - 40 feet) high.

In association with the cypress are found Mormon tea, Ephedra viridis, basin sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata, buck brush, Ceanothus cuneatus, mountain mahogany, Cercocarpus ledifolius, silk-tassel bush, Garrya flavescens var. pallida, Fremontia californica, Yucca whipplei, and scrub oak, Quercus sp.

Growing on a steep north slope in soil derived from the Mesozoic granitic rock, here primarily of the Isabella granodiorite formation, the groves are in a climatic situation approximating that of the Bodfish Grove.

Integrity: Several fires have destroyed portions of the stands in the past half-century, but the re-growth is vigorous. There is a trail to the area.

Use: Educational, research, observational.
