Map Satellite Well known as a California condor, Gymnogyps californianus, observation post, the summit area of Mount Pinos contains a fine stand of limber pines, Pinus flexilis, and extensive colonies of Eriogonum kennedyi ssp. austromontanum. The former is a disjunct stand, with the nearest populations some 145 kilometers (90 miles) northeast in the Sierra. The Eriogonum is known from this locality and the San Bernardino Mountains to the east. There are several disjunct stands of plants commonly found in the Sierra, including Astragalus whitneyi, among others. Integrity: There is a road to the lookout tower atop the peak, as well as some picnic areas. Overuse by deer hunters and vehicles is lessening the flora and fauna. Use: Research, educational, observational. October 1976
