Map Satellite This Research Natural Area, the only area in the State so designated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, is located in the northwest corner of the Kern National Wildlife Refuge. The vegetation here is representative of the once more extensive alkali playas and sinks in the San Joaquin Valley. Among the species present are Allenrolfea occidentalis, Suaeda moquinii, Atriplex coronata, Frankenia salina, Lepidium dictyotum, Cressa truxillensis var. vallicola, and Delphinium recurvatum. An abundance of animals typical of the area is found here. Some of the more noteworthy include the San Joaquin kit fox, Vulpes macrotis mutica, kangaroo rats, Dipodomys spp., and burrowing owls, Speotyto cunicularia. The area lies in the old Tulare Lake bed.
