Tejon Hills Area

Map     Satellite

Lying at the south end of the San Joaquin Valley at the base of the Transverse Ranges, this area incorporates several communities.

In terms of size, the valley grassland occupies most of the land. Though most of the grasses are exotics such as Bromus madritensis ssp. rubens, there are a number of plants typical of the original community, including Salvia columbariae and Chorizanthe membranacea. The rare Mimulus pictus is found here and it is possible that the rare Layia leucopappa, which is found nearby, may occur here. Other noteworthy plants include Eschscholzia lemmonii ssp. kernensis and Ranunculus canus var. ludovicianus).

A portion of the area is in oak woodland, with blue oak, Quercus douglasii, the dominant. Along the intermittent stream beds there is a sparse riparian association.

Integrity: In much of the area the long-term quality of the private management of the land has sustained the unique species.

Use: Research, educational, observational, present. Much of the area is private.
