Map Satellite Two separate parcels form this reserve which is located on the northern slopes of Boggs Mountain. On the larger, western parcel a mixed evergreen forest is the primary cover; on the eastern, chaparral dominates. Eight species of oak occur on the reserve, interior live, Quercus wislizenii, canyon live, Quercus chrysolepis, blue, Quercus douglasii, Oregon, Quercus garryana, valley, Quercus. lobata, and California black, Quercus. kelloggii, which are found in the forested portion, and leather, Quercus durata, together with scrub, Quercus berberidifolia, in the chaparral. Other trees in the evergreen forest include Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, madrone, Arbutus menziesii, ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana, and knobcone pine, Pinus attenuata. Chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, coffeeberry, Rhamnus californica, yerba santa, Eriodictyon californicum, and Ceanothus spp. are among the components of the chaparral. Along the banks of the three perennial streams that flow through the reserve there is a riparian association that includes California bay, Umbellularia californica, white alder, Alnus rhombifolia, big-leaf maple, Acer macrophyllum, and cottonwoods, Populus fremontii. A nascent marsh is present on the eastern parcel, with cattails, Typha sp., and white alder. Animals are abundant. Among those found here are bobcat, Lynx rufus, gray fox, Urocyon cinereoargenteus, coyote, Canis latrans, pileated woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus, spotted owl, Strix occidentalis, and water ouzel, Cinclus mexicanus. The blue grouse, Dendragapus obscurus, which lends its name to an adjacent spring, has not been sighted in the area since the mid-1970's. The reserve is wholly within the Boggs Mountain - Big Canyon Creek Area. Integrity: There are roads and several buildings on the reserve and a portion has been manipulated to form a meadow. Some parts of the forest are virgin. Use: Research, educational, observational. May 1982
