Map Satellite Along this sometimes steeply sloped canyon, which is traversed by Gilbert Creek, is a typical vegetative pattern of mixed conifers on the eastern slopes and chaparral on the western. The conifers include ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, and Douglas fir, Pseudotsuqa menziesii. The rare Hesperolinon adenophyllum is found in several localities in the Basin. In one stretch, approximately a kilometer (0.5 mile) long, some 40 springs issue from the western slopes. This portion is primarily serpentine. Integrity: There is a building in the area, and an old dam forms a moderate-sized reservoir. Various dirt trails traverse the Basin. Once grazed, the area is logged for Christmas trees. Use: Mostly private. February 1977
