Hell's Half Acre

In this area, Putah Creek has cut a gorge some 200 meters (650 feet) deep through the surrounding Pleistocene pyroclastic volcanic rocks, forming on the north side a spectacular steep-sided cliff.

On the south side, the vegetation is primarily chaparral; on the north, valley oak, Quercus lobata, woodland with grassland. Among the noteworthy plants in the area are stream orchid, Epipactis gigantea, Calochortus luteus, leopard lily, Lilium pardalinum, and the Fritillaria affinis.

There is a diverse and rich fauna here. Golden eagles, Aquila chrysaetos, have been reported nesting in the area.

Integrity: Virtually undisturbed, though there is a military reservation bordering the area.
