Mount Konocti

Map     Satellite

Mount Konocti is a composite volcanic cone composed primarily of rhyodacite. It consists of several summit craters and a number of parasitic cones. The best example of a crater is Southern Peak which has a shallow, summit depression. Various small cinder cones occur on the flanks. The main volcanic activity here ended in the middle or early upper Pleistocene, though more recent eruptions may have occurred at Buckingham Peak.

Several plant communities are found on the mountain, including chaparral, mixed conifer, and oak forests. The conifers include Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa. There are excellent stands of canyon oak, Quercus chrysolepis. The narrow endemic, Konocti manzanita, Arctostaphylos manzanita ssp. elegans, is abundant on the mountain.

Integrity: There are roads on the mountain, an electronic installation atop the peak, and various abandoned homesteads.
