Map Satellite While by no means in a natural state, having been mined since about 1865, this area is one of the best known of the recent volcanic areas in the region. Solfataric activity continues and has decomposed a recently erupted flow, in part, to white opal. The lava, primarily andesite, here appears to have issued from a vent under the flow which is probably the center of the more intense solfataric activity. This eruption began approximately 45,000 B.P. This is one of the few places where the deposition of mercury in relation to hot springs activity can be observed. Integrity: The area was mined between 1865 and 1945. Use: Private Ref: White, D. R. 1962. Sulphur Bank, California: A Major Hot Spring Quicksilver Deposit in Petrologic Studies; A Volume to Honor D.
