Map Satellite A kilometer or so south of the Eagle Lake Field Station, on the lower portion of the northwest slope of Black Mountain, there is a long (2 kilometers, 1.25 miles) and narrow band of a typical old-growth Jeffrey pine forest. In addition to Pinus jeffreyi there are a few white firs, Abies concolor, and, in the understory, mountain mahogany, Cercocarpus betuloides. Animal life is abundant. Of note is the presence of pikas, Ochotona princeps, in the rocky lava flows bordering the forest. Black Mountain is of Quaternary volcanic origin. Integrity: The forest has not been logged. Use: Private December 1979
