Button Mountain Bitterbrush Natural Area

Typical of the bitterbrush-sage community, this area was designated a Natural Area in 1965. The dominant species is the bitterbrush (antelope brush) Purshia tridentata. Associated with it is the Sierra juniper, Juniperus occidentalis, and the common sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata. The grass understory is dominated by the exotic Bromus tectorum, but includes the natives Pseudoroegneria spicata ssp. spicata, Elymus elymoides ssp. elymoides, and Festuca idahoensis among others.

The area is situated in rough, rolling mountainous landscape of recent volcanic origins.

Integrity: The area has been grazed and is used as a forage ground for numerous wild species. It is now protected.

Use: Research, education.
