Eagle Lake Marsh

Map     Satellite

Approximately a kilometer north of the Eagle Lake Field Station is a small freshwater marsh. The vegetation grades from the marsh into the surrounding Great Basin sagebrush. Dominants in the marsh include Scirpus sp. and Juncus sp.

A number of animals are found in and about the marsh, including muskrats, Ondatra zibethica, raccoons, Procyon lotor, and woodrats, Neotoma fuscipes. Heermann kangaroo rat, Dipodomys heermanni, occurs nearby in the uplands.

Yellow-headed blackbirds, Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus, breed here in abundance. Loggerhead shrike, Lanius ludovicianus, and sandhill cranes, Grus canadensis, are also found here.

The marsh fluctuates seasonally, with a maximum depth of about 1.5 meters (4.5 feet).

Integrity: The area is in good condition.
