Butte Valley Wildflower Sanctuary

Map     Satellite

This sanctuary is located approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) north of the Saddleback Butte State Park.

The topography is undulating and gently sloping to the west.  Soils are Quaternary alluvium.

Creosote scrub is the dominant community, covering over half the area.  The remainder consists of a Joshua tree woodland.  In addition to the Larrea tridentata and Yucca brevifolia, other plants that occur here in some abundance are fiddleneck, Amsinckia tessellata, the peppergrass, Lepidium flavum, Oenothera sp., and Coreopsis sp.

Animal life is relatively abundant and includes the antelope ground squirrel, Ammospermophilus leucuruis, and the desert night lizard, Xantusia vigilis.

Integrity: A dirt road and a telephone line cross the area. Though there has been some off-road-vehicle activity, the area is virtually undisturbed.

Use:  Research, educational, present.
