Map Satellite Located in Santa Anita Canyon, in the transition zone between chaparral and pine woodland where the Coulter pine, Pinus coulteri, is dominant, is an area of botanical interest. It is the only known locality in the San Gabriel Range for the madrone, Arbutus menziesii. Though relict populations range to San Diego County, the madrone is sparsely distributed in Southern California. Other plants of interest include Ceanothus oliganthus and Pickeringia montana. The rare Galium grande occurs here. Integrity: There is a ranger station as well as a public picnic area here; however, the surrounding vegetation is relatively undisturbed. Use: Research, educational, observational, light recreation. July 1976
