Map Satellite Juday Flat may be considered the southern limit of the Foothill Woodland community (Munz) which extends north to Trinity County. Here the California buck-eye, Aesculus californica, is at its southern limit, and the gray pine, Pinus sabiniana, close, as its southernmost stand is some 25 kilometers (15 miles) west-southwest. Other members of the community found here include blue oak, Quercus douglasii, canyon oak, Quercus chrysolepis, valley oak, Quercus lobata, coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, interior live oak, Quercus wislizenii, and some California bay, Umbellularia californica. Portions of the area are chaparral, with chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Yucca whipplei, and mountain mahogany, Cercocarpus betuloides, conspicuous. There is an abundant animal population including the Pacific kangaroo rat, Dipodomys agilis, mountain lion, Felis concolor, badger, Taxidea taxus, numerous birds, Gilbert's skink, Eumeces gilberti, and insects such as ceanothus silk moth, Samia euryalus. The area, which is underlain by granite, lies immediately north of the San Andreas Rift Zone. Integrity: There is a well-maintained boys' camp in the area, together with some jeep trails; however, it is relatively undisturbed. Use: Research, educational, observational, on public portion. Remainder, private. July 1976
