Lake Enchanto Oak Forest

Map     Satellite

On the steep hillside south of Lake Enchanto is one of the least disturbed stands of coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, in the Santa Monica Mountains. The dense forest, which covers about half the area, occurs on the lower and middle portions of the slope, associated with coffeeberry, Rhamnus californica, poison oak, Toxicodendron diversilobum, wood fern, Dryopteris arguta, and California maidenhair, Adiantum jordanii.

The upper portions of the area are chaparral, covered with red-heart, Ceanothus spinosus, flowering ash, Fraxinus dipetala, and scrub oak, Quercus sp.  At the base of the hill, along Malibu Creek, there is a riparian association with sycamore, Platanus racemosa, and the ash, Fraxinus velutina (var. coriacea).

A variety of animal life is present, with various species of ducks and the great blue heron, Ardea herodias, occasionally sighted in the riparian area.

Underlying rocks are of the Miocene Conejo volcanics.

Integrity:  Virtually undisturbed.
