Map Satellite A variety of communities occurs in the canyon, southern oak woodland, chaparral, coastal sage scrub, riparian woodland and, most significantly, a valley oak savannah. The savannah, in which individual specimens of the valley oak, Quercus lobata, may measure over 1.5 meters (5 feet) in diameter, lies on the Quaternary alluvium of the rather broad canyon floor and on the lower slopes of the hills to the east. The valley oak is very close to the southernmost limit of its range on the mainland here. Integrity: Portions of the area have been cultivated and grazed, and a sewer line and road run along the canyon floor. As a part of the Malibu Creek State Park, the area is being considered for a preserve status, with restoration of the savannah. Use: Research, educational, observational. Some private. December 1979
