Wildlife Sanctuary
Map Satellite Located at the west end of the Puente Hills, the Sanctuary is composed primarily of coastal sage scrub, with Artemisia californica, Salvia spp., Eriogonum fasciculatum, Rhus integrifolia Malosma laurina, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Heteromeles arbutifolia, and Sambucus mexicana, among others. On the north-facing slopes and in the canyon basins are stands of Southern oak woodland, with Quercus agrifolia the dominant. The area also contains patches of grasslands with annuals. Many animals are found within the area. The bedrock in the area includes siltstone and sandstone outcroppings of Miocene and Pliocene age, with interbeds of Pliocene gravels plus fluvial valley fills of Quaternary age. There is a small, ephemeral creek. Integrity: Portions have been grazed but the area is now in a protected status. Use: Research, educational, observational.
