Rock Creek

Wildlife Sanctuary

Map     Satellite

Located approximately 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) west of the Alpine Butte Wildlife Sanctuary, the Rock Creek (working name) Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the more diverse of the Antelope Valley sanctuaries in terms of plant communities.

Three separate communities are found here.  A desert-wash community comprises approximately 20 percent of the area; the remainder is about evenly divided between creosote bush scrub and Joshua tree woodland.  The latter occurs on the gradual slope towards Alpine Butte.

The soil is sandy, Quaternary alluvium.

Integrity:  The area is virtually undisturbed.

Use: Research, educational, present.
